New Cognitive Model of Bulimia Nervosa

A paper describing Myra Cooper, Adrian Wells and Gillian Todd's new model of bulimia has just come out in the British Journal of Clinical Psychology.


Although we know that CBT as developed by Fairburn and colleagues is very often helpful in treating bulimia, it is also clear that some people fail to benefit from this approach. So new approaches are very welcome in this area. One of the main differences between the new model and the Fairburn model is that Cooper and colleagues incorporate evidence suggesting that emotion may also have a role in the maintenance of the binge-purge cycle. It also incorporates more recent developments in cognitive therapy such as the role of core beliefs and schema processes including avoidance and compensation. Treatment based on Cooper
