A Look in the Mirror: A body image workbook for young women
'A Look in the Mirror: Freeing Yourself from the Body Image Blues' by Valerie Rainon McManus has just been published by the Child and Family Press. Its aim is to help young women to develop a healthy body image despite the pressures from media and other sources.
It's an approachable and well laid-out book with chapters covering societal expectations, the media and advertising, dieting and eating disorders and how to develop a self-image which is not simply based on appearance.
The book combines educational sections with creative assignments and activity pages. Valerie Rainon McManus encourages the teenage reader to use writing, drawing and collage to complete the activities and, en route, to explore their attitudes about body image and societal expectations of thinness.
I'd recommend the book to young women and girls who are interested in exploring body image issues, but also to teachers, mental health workers and other professionals who work with young people. Professionals may find it useful to pick certain assignments or worksheets to use as appropriate, rather than working through the whole book. I wonder whether the book is more appropriate for a US audience than a UK one as I felt that the writing style might work slightly better with US readers.
