The Research Training Network INTACT (Individually Tailored Stepped Care for Women with Eating Disorders) is a multi-disciplinary network of 9 partners from 8 European countries which aims to improve health care for women with eating disorders. INTACT are offering a number of research studentships in eating disorders and related topics to qualified individuals.
INTACT aims to research and develop individually tailored treatment and stepped care interventions based around risk and maintaining factors, and the processes of getting well and staying well. The network will use a wide range of methodologies spanning genetics, neurobiology, psycholinguistics, psychotherapy process and mental health service research to internet and communication technology. The network's training program combines local specialists with network-wide training activities including individual training-through-research, secondments to other network partners, education in transferable skills, regular network meetings, summer schools and mentoring to advise trainees on career paths. In addition to the monthly salary, allowances for the transnational mobility program and for career development will also be provided.

In a recent study in the Journal of the American Medical Association, Walsh and colleagues studied women who had received psychotherapy for anorexia nervosa and reached the normal range for weight. They then compared fluoxetine (Prozac) and placebo in these women, who continued to receive weekly psychotherapy. The percentage of those remaining in recovery after 1 year was effectively the same in both the active and placebo groups (around 30%). This suggests that Prozac does not help to prevent relapse in anorexia. This finding is in contrast to a small study conducted by Kaye and colleagues in 1991 who suggested there might be a role for antidepressants like Prozac in preventing relapse.
Thanks to Joel Yager for drawing my attention to this (via the AED mailing list).

I am really looking forward to a workshop entitled 'Working with identity and values: An introduction to narrative practice with eating disorders' by Jones, Borden and McCormack, having had my excitement about the use of narrative approaches in eating disorders re-kindled by reading Biting the Hand that Starves You. I'm also keen to attend Claire Tanner and Frances Connan's workshop on 'The secret relationship': Harmful relationships between staff and patients in eating disorder services'. And I like the idea of a training track on conducting research.
All in all it looks like an exciting programme (and I'm not just saying that because I'm in it!)
